Through time and space” is a visual passage through the history and mechanisation of the pushcarts of New York City. The images have been layered to evoke a sense of what is and what was. The photographs have been captured unconventionally through a secondary source. They have been picked up and post produced from Google Street View. I was inspired by this method after coming across the work of infamous photographer, Mishka Henner.

The pushcarts are symbolic of change and advancement. They are simply a reflection of technological development. The images have been treated to show movement even when the images are still

The overlaid images of the old pushcarts have been sourced and cut out from New York-based digital collections such as the New York Public Library, Museum of the City of New York and Ephemeral New York flaunt a mature collection, rich with the citys cultural heritage. The images have been developed to kindle a sensation of movement and progress through time.

Each images has been composed from cutouts of several different images to juxtapose on top of the modern day carts. The resulting image is almost eerie, it is like a window to the past, it questions the beauty carried by modernisation, it's positive, and negative impacts. Is efficiency the only important factor or is it necessary to preserve form?

The backside of the opaque paper fills in the white space of the transparent paper while flipping the pages. This shows a mirror image where the viewer is able to compare the characteristics of the old and new. The cover of the book is red as an ode to New York being known as “The Big Apple”.
