I created this showcase video for the typeface as well. It evokes a disgusting but funny feeling with

the typeface being clogged in the sink.

It comes in three variables: drizzle, rainy, and thunder. Each letterform has been traced from a fallen hair.

The first step to designing the typeface was collecting images of fallen hair. I collected over 50 images of fallen hair on an are.na page and gave each picture

a personality based on what it looks like.

Then I proceeded to trace the curves and loops of the hair to create parts of the letter. After creating over five to seven variations of each letter and number, I was happy with the letterset.

After completing the final traces, I adjusted the widths, x-height, and y-height of the letters to create visual balance.

This typeface is not meant to work as a functional typeface perhaps, rather it is a fun experimental commentary on the use of beziers, anchor points, and handles.

This project was helpful in terms of making me understand the anatomy of type, the different structural features that need to be addressed and how to give a project some context and personality through type alone.

The letters were also edited to look slightly fuzzy to give an exaggerated feeling of something hairy.

The Process

CATEGORY : EXPERIMENTAL TYPE DESIGN

The Hair Type is an experimental typeface that comes in three variables. Instead of the type variability traditionally indicating changes in thickness, height, slant, etc., the Hair Types variability changes according to the weather. As the weather gets more humid, the hair type gets FRIZZY, and FRIZZIER, and even FRIZZIER! (just like normal hair does)
